Located in historic Deadwood, South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills, the hotel at the Landmark Casino & Hotel is a 23-room boutique retreat housed within the storied walls of the 130-year-old Adams Block building.
The design began with a singular vision: to create a beautiful and inviting hotel experience that preserves, honors and enhances the historic integrity of the structure.
By embracing the authenticity of the building and weaving in the rich character of Deadwood’s past, the hotel offers guests a truly unique and immersive stay.
The existing architecture played a crucial role in shaping the hotel design. Each guest room follows a distinctive layout dictated by the original structure, ensuring that no two stays are ever quite the same. This individuality enhances the guest experience, inviting guests to return and discover something new with each visit.
To highlight the building’s historic charm, Cuningham’s approach to the interior design embraces its original brick walls, restoring graphic murals that tell the story of the past while integrating a modern sensibility.
A deep, moody color palette was chosen to complement the warmth and texture of the brick, allowing its raw beauty to stand out against a backdrop of contemporary sophistication.
Beyond the guest rooms, the design extends into the corridors, where history and artistry merge. As the hallways twist and turn, special moments emerge—carefully curated murals printed on mylar bring historic photographs to life, their softly illuminated surfaces lending a modern, almost whimsical quality to the past.
These visual narratives guide guests through the space, fostering a sense of connection to Deadwood’s storied heritage.
Throughout the design, key concepts of texture, intimacy, comfort, luxury and authenticity served as guiding principles for the Cuningham interior design team. Soft materials and layered lighting create a warm, inviting atmosphere, while carefully selected furnishings blend classic elegance with a contemporary edge. The result is a hotel that feels both timeless and fresh—a place where history is not just preserved but celebrated, offering guests an experience that is as enriching as it is unforgettable.
The project was designed in collaboration with Chamberlin Architects.
